remembering the old masters

Part of the series of the paintings that I am working on is based on the work of old masters. They are some of my favorite pieces of art and work that has influenced me as an artist.

Flaming June by Frederic Leighton is the piece that I am currently working on. The first piece posted below is the original painting by Frederic Leighton, the second picture is my reference shot of the model, and the last image is a VERY ROUGH first layer of oil that I have put down on canvas. I just wanted to show you my process and inspiration. I thought it would be interesting to try and have the mermaids tail and fin mimic the fabric in the original painting. Also, I will have her hair mimic the rest of the surrounding brown fabric. It should be an interested piece. I will keep posting as I work more on it.

Thanks for stopping by!

FINISHED!!!

It's a pretty bad picture, I couldn't capture the actual colors in the painting. They are so subtle... I like it so much more in person. Glad to have this one done though. If you click on the image it will enlarge.

Thanks for checking in!
